Germantown United Methodist Church has a long and rich history of serving God, the church, and our community, through music. If you are seeking a church that makes music an opportunity for service, look no further than Germantown United Methodist Church.
Choir Opportunities
The Chancel Choir
The Chancel Choir, the primary ensemble in the traditional service, is open to any singers who have a sincere desire to serve God through music. We seek singers that have finished high school or older, and new members are always welcome. If you sang in High School or College, the Chancel Choir gives you an opportunity for service that highlights your gifts and experience. The choir participates every Sunday in worship at the Traditional worship service, presents seasonal events, Evensong services and occasional major works with orchestra. Chancel Choir meets in the Choir Suite at 6:30 Wednesday nights from late August through June.
The Contemporary Prism Riot Praise Band
The Contemporary Prism Riot Praise Band includes both singers and instrumentalists who provide music for our Contemporary worship service. The band consists of fine singers, a rhythm section of drums, bass, guitar and keyboards, and other instruments are added as available. Musical offerings range from fresh treatments of well-known hymns of the faith to the most current Contemporary Christian standards.
Testimony Choir
Testimony Choir gives our youth an opportunity to serve the church through music and be in musical fellowship together. Testimony is open to all youth in grades 6-12. No audition or previous choral experience is necessary. Testimony rehearses on Sundays during the school year and sings in Sunday morning worship services on a regular basis. Leading the Holy Thursday service during Holy Week is a particular highlight of the year. Testimony meets in the Choir Suite at 5:00 p.m. Sunday evenings from the Sunday after Labor Day until mid to late May.
Matins Handbell Choir
Matins Handbell Choir is a group of experienced ringers that prepare music for participation in worship and occasional concert appearances. This group tackles challenging repertoire that highlights the many techniques of fine handbell composition. Experienced musicians will enjoy the musical effort required and the fellowship of this ensemble. Matins meets in the Handbell Studio at 6:15 Sunday nights from the Sunday after Labor Day until mid to late May.
Cherub Choir
The youngest, Cherub Choir, preK and K, focuses on pairing movement with song and discovering biblical stories told in music. Cherub Choir invites an adult (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle) to stay in the room to participate alongside the child chorister. They meet for 45 minutes in room 260.
The Alleluia Choir
The Alleluia Choir, 1-2 grades, incorporates movement and rhythm into their activities. This group also receives an introduction to healthy singing tone and participates regularly in our worship services. They meet for one hour in room 257.
The Hosanna Choir
The Hosanna Choir, 3-5 grades, is for our oldest children. An understanding of our hymns and hymnal, continued development of singing tone, and leadership in worship are part of Hosanna Choir activities. They meet for one hour in room 240, The Huddle. These choirs meet from the Sunday after Labor Day until early May.
Wesley Chimes
Wesley Chimes provides another opportunity for children to participate in making music. Ringing chimes in worship is the result of engaging music notation instruction and hand chime ringing techniques. Children from 2nd through 5th grade are encouraged to participate. Wesley Chimes meets for 30 minutes in the Handbell Studio on Wednesday nights at 5:30.
Dell Harriman Music ministry Endowment Fund
Learn More
Established by Dr. Mark and Patty Harriman, the Dell Harriman Music Ministry Endowment Fund provides funding for music programs of Germantown United Methodist Church which she supported so faithfully. Dell Scott was born in Swartz, LA in 1923. She passed away ninety-nine years and ten days later. She was raised a Baptist but became a Methodist when she married Willard Harriman on Christmas Day 1942. She lived in Hamburg, AR and many other U.S. towns while Willard completed his Army Air Corp training before leaving to fight WW II in Egypt. They raised four sons.
Dell’s great loves at Germantown United Methodist Church were the Gilbert Sunday School Class and The Music Ministry, especially the choir. She knew many hymns by heart, and she used to joke that the choir sounded wonderful on any given Sunday but that she only heard one voice, her son’s!
Dell, because of her great humility, would be both humbled and thrilled to have anything named after her. The Dell Harriman Music Ministry Endowment will honor Dell’s tremendous faith and support GUMC’s wonderful music program in perpetuity.
The Fund will be used to sponsor concerts and educational workshops with industry leaders for our traditional worship community. The Fund will provide opportunity for the commissioning of new sacred music and subsidize Music Ministry educational travel and performance opportunities to locations such as Lake Junaluska, St. Simon’s, and John Wesley’s England. All contributions to the Fund will remain as principal, with only the interest from contributions being utilized. Proceeds from the Fund will be accessible in full for any need identified by the Minister of Music.
Your participation in developing the fund is encouraged and may be done online by using heading HERE and selecting the Dell Harriman Music Endowment Fund in the drop-down menu. Cash, checks and Estate planning gifts may be directed to the church office.
Questions regarding Fund Management may be directed to the Germantown United Methodist Church Executive Minister.
Schantz Organ
Learn More
The Schantz pipe organ was dedicated on July 9, 1978, two years after the completion of the current sanctuary. Given by the family of Ruby Owings, it was dedicated as the Mary Ella Mosby Tyler organ to honor her faithful service as organist since 1939. The instrument underwent a complete tonal re-voicing and expansion in 1995 owing to a generous gift from Barbara Hamilton. This expansion brought the organ to its current size of 42 ranks. At the same time, the console was updated from pneumatic operation to electronic circuitry including MIDI interface. Acoustical enhancements to the sanctuary during the 2003 renovation have further augmented the tonal qualities of the organ.
